Spelling and typing

I spend a lot of time on the PC/internet and I am typing a lot. Most of that is on msn, but there is a lot on forums, the blog and emails as well.

I care a lot about how things are spelled, I know this isn’t my first language, but I believe that I make an impression with how I type/write things, so I always attempt to use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

It isn’t always that easy, for years and years I’ve been meaning to do a typing course [or something similar], as I can type relatively fast, but always have to look at the keyboard. And there are quite a few bad habits that I’ve gotten used to over the past months, such as spelling ‘the’ as ‘teh’ or ‘Thank’ as Thakns’.

It is irritating me a lot as I generally don’t realise that I make the mistakes until it is almost [or more often actually is] too late and the post/comment/email has been sent.

There are several programs teaching people to type on the internet, i.e. amazon and I’ll suppose I’ll probably do one of those soon. Has anyone ever tried them before? Do they actually work?

I also type the as teh,a lot of times actually.

I don’t know if typing tutor or anything like that works because I’ve never tried that. All my speed came from “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy little dog”

You need to relax and try correcting your common mistakes and slowly you’ll stop making them altogether.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy little dog. Interesting. How many times did you type that?

Yea I make similar mistakes but there is an interesting feature that has saved my life on my iMac it just checks your spelling on the go…However it doesn’t work in Flock :'(

I just wish I actually spent more time concentrating on what I type thought but I have found that it has improved rather than got worse over time. Although I still have my off days, similar to my off days were I can’t talk properly…Lol

I have the same thing with typos. Even at times I spell the teh or and adn without realising. I guess just typing slower and before pressing send just check your spelling until you get into the habit is all I can suggest.

    Being in your crew Toby? I don’t know…. :P

Typing slower, yeah, I suppose I’ll have to do that.

Good days and bad days is definitely something I know of as well. Meh, I suppose typing wise today is a bad day.

I touch type and I can tell when I’ve hit the wrong key, for example I’m watching tv now and I know when to erase a certain letter etc. It’s quite a good skill to have to be honest, my teachers are always well impressed and I’ve written my friend’s essays before just copying off paper whilst speaking to him. I consider my english to be pretty good, especially for my age. The only thing I lack is a large vocabulary which is annoying when I write essays as it takes me twice as long.

*I haven’t even looked atall so I apologise for poor punctuation*

You see, I’d love to touch type and type really fast, but I just don’t. I mean, yes, my English isn’t bad and I can type decently, but it just takes me a long time, especially if I type longer texts.

    Thanks, Becky.

Well finally something I can claim that I can do better than Cat [Not the English!] I can type without looking at the keyboard! :D

Btw, I’ve used some programs to teach my little cousin brother once to type… called TypeMaster or something. Actually, if I’d recommend better stay away from them. They’re great to learn to type but if you want to increase speed they’re not going to be any help. Handy Tip: I increased my typing speed by IMing five people at once on Yahoo! Everyone talked at the same time so naturally you’ve to type fast. :D

About the spellings, you already speak English like a brit but if you still want something like a spellchecker try getting the Firefox extension. It’s nice and I use it! :)

Well, I type fast. I have no problems typing on msn, as small mistakes don’t really matter and I’m generally in at least 5 different convos, it’s just I know I could do faster/better, I just don’t know how to do it?

And I didn’t know I can do so much better than you?! :P

When I was a kid,I think I used to write it 20 times everyday because I needed an excuse for sitting on the computer and my parents wouldn’t let me if they caught me playing games. So I’d start doing “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy little dog” whenever they’d come watching. It helped making the typing fast though :P
